Beer in Viborg

It is actually surprising that beer is still brewed in Viborg, considering that back in 1726 a maid in a brewery yard caused nearly the entire town to burn down to the ground in just three days.

The Odin Brewery was founded in 1832 at St. Sct. Mikkels Gade 7. Later, the brewery was bought by a German who started brewing Bavarian-style beer, which did not appeal to the people of Viborg.

In 1868, the cellar of the front building was converted into the beer hall “Valhalla.” In 1977, the brewery moved to new buildings on Fanøvej and later became part of Faxe Brewery – now Royal Unibrew. About 10 years later, Faxe stopped brewing beer in Viborg, and Denmark’s oldest brewery closed after 156 years.
